Alan Karass is Dean of Libraries at Columbus State University in Columbus, Georgia. His ethnomusicological research focuses on the relationship between politics, identity, and music festivals in Tunisia. He contributed a chapter entitled “Identity, Music, and Festivity in Southern Tunisia” to Oxford University Press’s Handbook of Musical Identities.
As a founding member of the ensemble FloraMusica, Alan is an active recorder player. He served as President of the American Recorder Society from 2002 to 2006. Alan has also performed on oud with the Tufts Takht and has studied with John Berberian (USA), Mal Barsamian (USA), Nabil Ata (USA), William Shaheen (USA), Ramses Gharsallah (Tunisia), and Youssef Abdelmalek (Tunisia).
